The Duke Power Company’s Cherokee Power Station was supposed to go online near Gaffney. Since it was built but never used, it proved to be the perfect location for James Cameron’s 1989 movie “The Abyss”. They filled the tanks with water after building the sets and used it to shoot the film, actualy under water. For Ed Harris this was a terrifying experience, since he nearly lost his life during production. If you are in South Carolina, you can see the power station just outside Gaffney.
