The Last Jedi – Sybil Head

Image

On one of the most beautiful locations in the World (as written by National Geographic), on the west coast of Ireland, a historic scene was created for a ‘galaxy far far away’.

The crew for ‘The Last Jedi’ had used the Island of Skellig Michael for the scenes where Luke Skywalker is found by Rey. On this Island, beehive huts can be found. These are not the actual ones used for the film, instead on the mainland of Ireland, at Sybil Head, these amazing huts were recreated.

The Last Jedi – Brow Head

For the disappointing sequel to “The Force Awakens”, “The Last Jedi” – Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) refuses to train Rey (the wonderful Daisy Ridley) on the Islands of Skellig Michael.

Rey has a vision in a cave, these caves are in Ireland, but not on the Island itself. Instead they are on the mainland, at Brow Head. About 8 minutes from Brow Head lies Crookhaven where the crew went for food and drinks (O’Sullivans Bar claims to have been used as a place for cast and crew to have a rest).

The Last Jedi : Butler Arms Hotel

Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley visited Ireland for “The Force Awakens” . They returned to the Irish “Wild Atlantic Way” for the 2017 movie “The Last Jedi”. One of the Hotels they stayed in while filming on the islands of Skellig Michael was the “Butler Arms Hotel“.

The location where the crew had the wrap-party was Portmagee. Food was served at the Moorings and the final party was at the Bridge Bar.

Attack of the Clones : Italy

For the second prequel to Star Wars (Attack of the Clones), Anakin marries Queen Padmé in the end. Not in a galaxy far away on Naboo, but in the European country of Italy. The building used is Villa del Balbianello and is located near lake Como.

Rogue One (Star Wars) – Jordan

UNESCO’s world heritage “Wadi Rum” has been used for movies for many years. “Lawrence of Arabia” (1960) is well known for using this location, and the red sand makes it a popular location for films that appear to have been shot on Mars (“The Martian”).

In 2016 the crew for Rogue One turned Wadi Rum into the dessert location Jedha where a great battle takes place. Jedha is a pilgrmage planet for Force believers…

Although the wide exteriors were filmed in Jordan, other shots are actualy filmed at Elstree Studios in London.

Rogue One (Star Wars) – Iceland

Image

Iceland has become a very popular location for film and tv-productions. Recently, many scenes for “Game of Thrones” were filmed here as well as “Prometheus” and “Batman”.

But also “The Force Awakens” was filmed here (snow scenes). Rogue One does not visit Iceland for the snow, but for the rough exteriors. Jynn’s home is on the planet of Eadu, what we know as Iceland. In the south, Mýrdalssandur beach, Reynisfjara and Hafursey and Hjörleifshöfði (the haunted mountain of Iceland) mountains can be spotted in the film.

Rogue One – London

While a lot of Rogue One was filmed on a soundstage at Elstree Studios (Hertfordshire), the crew went outside of this location as well to film at some weird locations. While exteriors for Scarif were filmed at the Maldives, perhaps the weirdest of all locations is “Canary Wharf Tube Station” in London. Clearly visible, and very accesible for all fans, this tube station was used as a filming location when the line was closed (midnight till four).

The Force Awakens – Isle of Skye

“Prometheus”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Skyfall” and “Harry Potter” have all been here before J.J. Abrahams decided to use this location in the “Force Awakens”.

A New Hope – Djerba

Image

Why not travel to a galaxy far, far away? There is one place filled with the most wretched scumm and villany on the planet, where you are able to find a captain bold enough to take you there. Mos Eisley spaceport ofcourse, filmed on the small Island of Djerba, Tunesia. The home of Obi Wan was also filmed there.

The Phantom Menace – Ksar Hadada

Image

A national monument in the Tunesian dessert was again used in the Phantom Menace. The buildings in Ksar Hadada were supposed to be the small town of Mos Espa.

It has also become a Hotel.
