Doctor Who – Cardiff – Bute Street

Image

Not the first time since the reboot of Doctor Who 2005 (and Torchwood) that the BBC crew used Bute Street as a filming location. After visiting South Africa with the new 11th doctor lady, they are back in Wales in this familiar street. In fall 2018 we will see what has been filmed here…

Cardiff Uni

On 10 November 2017, filming took place at Cardiff University for Season 11 of Doctor Who. Still unclear what scenes are being filmed here, speculation is that one of the new companions of the female Doctor is a policeman.
Scenes are also filmed at the “Kidney Research Sop”.

Life on Mars – Manchester

Image

For the BBC SciFi drama “Life on Mars” (named after the David Bowie song), the main location for filming is Manchester in the UK. Sam Tyler (John Simm) gets into an accident and finds himself waking up in the Police Force of the 1970’s under supervision from DCI Gene Hunt (Glenister). The story is set in Greater Manchester and some of the locations used are the Victoria Baths in Longsight. They are used several times throughout the show. First as the swimmingpool, later as old waterworks, a warehouse and the morgue of season two.

Sam first sees himself in 1973 in West Egerton Street. Rochdale Road and an alley near Princess Street are also used in season one. The police station is located at the end of Lacy Street (see the detailed map for exact locations) near the A6, it is Stopford House.

In season 1, St Thomas Hospital was used as the morgue (a real morgue).

Also used: WiIlliams Street (“Watch my car or I’ll stomp on your toys!”). Tiger Lounge near Cooper street is where the Casino is in season 2. Near Bond street is where Sam gets hit by a car in 2006.

Ashes to Ashes – London

Image

After the succesful series “Life on Mars”, this sequel to the show is set in London in the 1980’s. DI Alex Drake arrives from 2008 (or is this just some coma-induced dream???) and runs around the city with the politically incorrect DCI Gene Hunt and his red Audi Quatro.

While it is for BBC Wales, it is in fact recorded in East London. The Police Station is an old Stock Exchange building and can be found at 4-6 Christopher Street (Islington).

Now don’t go looking for Luigi’s Trattoria & Alex’s flat. The trattoria used is now a fish restaurant, but right across the street from the “Police Station” at 9 Christopher Street.

In the very first episode where Alex gets shot (seriously, no spoiler), this is near the Founders Arms (52 Hopton Street) on the South Bank of the Thames.

The Dark Knight Rises – Nottingham

Image

Nottingham maybe the home of another fictional hero, but in 2012, Christopher Nolan used the famous Wollaton Hall as the Wayne Manor (Batman). In previous episodes of his trilogy, only exteriors of the building were used, but in 2012 also the interior was used for filming.

Wollaton Hall is open for visitors, since it is one of the most famous buidlings of Nottingham and also a museum. It has a large park surrounding it so also very nice for a short walk.

More Batman locations here, and a lot can be found in the London Map (maked by a Bat)

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – Birmingham

Image

While writing this post, the movie has not yet been released. However, some locations are released by Birminghammail.

Including: Cornwall Street and Chamberlain Square.
Cornwall street will feature a “carchase with gunfire”.
Also Camberley in Surrey (UK) was used, here Poppy’s Bowling Lane can be found.

Studio work was done at Warner Bros, Leavesden.

Seems this movie is not set in London like the first Kingsman, although some filming took place here in December 2016 (after principal photography wraped).
