The Last Jedi – Malin Head

In the North-West point of Ireland, subterranean caves can be found. Although they are not accessible to the public, the crew for ‘The Last Jedi’ were allowed to use the location for filming.

Around Malin Head, multiple locations were used, a walking tour is available.

The Last Jedi – Sybil Head

On one of the most beautiful locations in the World (as written by National Geographic), on the west coast of Ireland, a historic scene was created for a ‘galaxy far far away’.

The crew for ‘The Last Jedi’ had used the Island of Skellig Michael for the scenes where Luke Skywalker is found by Rey. On this Island, beehive huts can be found. These are not the actual ones used for the film, instead on the mainland of Ireland, at Sybil Head, these amazing huts were recreated.

A New Hope – Chott el-Djerid

Image

Flat as a pancake, this location was used for the Original Star Wars. Chott el-Djerid dessert is now a military highway, but still known as “Star Wars Canyon”.  Also here is the Moss Eisley overlook and the attack of the Sand People.

The Force Awakens – Isle of Skye

Image

“Prometheus”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Skyfall” and “Harry Potter” have all been here before J.J. Abrahams decided to use this location in the “Force Awakens”.

The Force Awakens – Rub’ al Khali desert

Image

They needed sand for “The Force Awakens”, lots of sand, so why not go to the biggest desert in the world in the Arabian Peninsula? Rub’ al Khali desert is the largest sand desert in the world and is used as planet Jakku (and the actors say it was HOT HOT HOT!). Luxury resorts are nearby in case you would like to visit this desert (and this is also where the crew stayed).

Fun fact: while filming, codename AVCO was used (much like “Blue Harvest” was used for “Jedi”). Avco is the name of the theater where JJ saw “Star Wars”.

The Force Awakens – Krafla

Image

Volcanic Iceland is used for many Holywood Film and TV productions. Krafla is used in “Game of Thrones” for the location of the Wall, “Batman Begins”, “Interstellar” and “Oblivion” filmed here. For the production of episode VIII, the snow battle was filmed here. Also the much greener Lake Mývatn was used as a filming location, which is nearby on Iceland.

The Force Awakens – Skellig Michael

The Irish Island of Skellig Michael is used in the 2015 Star Wars reboot. Luke Skywalker is hiding on these islands, Rey finds him at the end of episode VII…

The Last Jedi:

Rey trains herself in the Islands of Skellig Michael (while Chewbacca has fun with the Porgs). More Irish locations have been used for the sequel to TFA.

A New Hope – Exteriors Lars Homestead

Several miles away from the hotel location used for Lars Homestead, the exteriors were filmed. This is the place where Luke watched the twin sunset.

A New Hope – Lars Homestead/Lukes Home

Image

Want to sleep at Luke Skywalkers place? Well, now you can! The location where George Lucas filmed the Original Star Wars movie, is a hotel. Many locations in the area were used for filming and some names are used in the films as well (Tatooine sounds a lot like a Tunesian town in the neigbourhood). Exteriors for Lars Homestead were filmed at Chott el Djerid.
