Doctor Who – Cardiff – Bute Street

Image

Not the first time since the reboot of Doctor Who 2005 (and Torchwood) that the BBC crew used Bute Street as a filming location. After visiting South Africa with the new 11th doctor lady, they are back in Wales in this familiar street. In fall 2018 we will see what has been filmed here…

Life on Mars – Manchester

Image

For the BBC SciFi drama “Life on Mars” (named after the David Bowie song), the main location for filming is Manchester in the UK. Sam Tyler (John Simm) gets into an accident and finds himself waking up in the Police Force of the 1970’s under supervision from DCI Gene Hunt (Glenister). The story is set in Greater Manchester and some of the locations used are the Victoria Baths in Longsight. They are used several times throughout the show. First as the swimmingpool, later as old waterworks, a warehouse and the morgue of season two.

Sam first sees himself in 1973 in West Egerton Street. Rochdale Road and an alley near Princess Street are also used in season one. The police station is located at the end of Lacy Street (see the detailed map for exact locations) near the A6, it is Stopford House.

In season 1, St Thomas Hospital was used as the morgue (a real morgue).

Also used: WiIlliams Street (“Watch my car or I’ll stomp on your toys!”). Tiger Lounge near Cooper street is where the Casino is in season 2. Near Bond street is where Sam gets hit by a car in 2006.

Ashes to Ashes – London

Image

After the succesful series “Life on Mars”, this sequel to the show is set in London in the 1980’s. DI Alex Drake arrives from 2008 (or is this just some coma-induced dream???) and runs around the city with the politically incorrect DCI Gene Hunt and his red Audi Quatro.

While it is for BBC Wales, it is in fact recorded in East London. The Police Station is an old Stock Exchange building and can be found at 4-6 Christopher Street (Islington).

Now don’t go looking for Luigi’s Trattoria & Alex’s flat. The trattoria used is now a fish restaurant, but right across the street from the “Police Station” at 9 Christopher Street.

In the very first episode where Alex gets shot (seriously, no spoiler), this is near the Founders Arms (52 Hopton Street) on the South Bank of the Thames.

Doctor Who – Cardiff – Temple of Peace

Image

The “Temple of Peace” in Cardiff, Wales, has been used for several “Doctor Who” episodes (as well as Sherlock, since both are being recorded in Wales). Close to the BBC Wales studios

On September 18 and 19 2007, the crew used the Temple for the episode “The Fires of Pompeii”. Exteriors were actualy filmed in Italy, but for the location where the Sisterhood worships the Pyrovile creature, a closer location to the studio was chosen.

It was a familiar location, since the crew used the Temple beginning of October 2004. “The end of the World” also used interiors recorded at the Temple of Peace. The conference halls were transformed into “Platform 1”, an alien spaceship 5 billion years into the future.

In 2006, another episode on “Platform 1” was written, so the crew returned to the Temple in September to film the scenes. But the Temple did not just stand in for the Platform, it also was used as the Hospital where “The Face of Boe” passed away (New New York).

Doctor Who – Fuerteventura

Image

Gallifrey, the most sought planet for the Doctor after 2005. A more “tropical” and deserted location was needed for the BBC crew then the usual locations near Cardiff (Wales). So off to Fuerteventura they went!

Doctor Who – Lanzarote and Tenerife

Image

The volcanic Island of Lanzarote can be a different planet with a little movie magic. This is what the production team for “Doctor Who” must have thought when looking for a location for “Kill the Moon”. Lanzarote was used as the moon….

The nearby Island Tenerife doubled as the wasteland of Skaro in “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar”.

Doctor Who – New York

Image

Used in a great many amount of films and tv-shows, Manhattan is a popular location for production crews around the globe. BBC is no exception. For the Doctor Who episodes “Daleks in Manhattan”, “Evolution of the Daleks” and  “The Angels take Manhattan”, only pick up shots were filmed in the big Apple. The main action was in fact not filmed here at all…
