Doctor Who – Dunraven Bay

Image

The Tenth Doctor (and his clone) return to Bad Wolf Bay in various episodes of “Doctor Who”. In the series the location of this beach is in Norway, but it was filmed only 20 miles to the west of Cardiff.

The Tenth Docter uses Dunraven Bay in “Army of Ghosts”, “Doomsday” (2006) and “Journeys End” (2008).

But even the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, has been here in “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone” in 2009.

Doctor Who – Llansannor Court

Image

The building used for Agatha Christie’s house in the Doctor Who episode “The Unicorn and the Wasp” is Llansannor Court. Another nice movie fact is that the father of David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor) has a very small cameo appearance in this episode. Also, Felicity Jones stars in this episode. Much later she will play a much larger part, Jyn Erso in “Rogue One”. An episode to watch, for sure.

The Force Awakens – Skellig Michael

The Irish Island of Skellig Michael is used in the 2015 Star Wars reboot. Luke Skywalker is hiding on these islands, Rey finds him at the end of episode VII…

The Last Jedi:

Rey trains herself in the Islands of Skellig Michael (while Chewbacca has fun with the Porgs). More Irish locations have been used for the sequel to TFA.

A New Hope – Exteriors Lars Homestead

Several miles away from the hotel location used for Lars Homestead, the exteriors were filmed. This is the place where Luke watched the twin sunset.

A New Hope – Lars Homestead/Lukes Home

Image

Want to sleep at Luke Skywalkers place? Well, now you can! The location where George Lucas filmed the Original Star Wars movie, is a hotel. Many locations in the area were used for filming and some names are used in the films as well (Tatooine sounds a lot like a Tunesian town in the neigbourhood). Exteriors for Lars Homestead were filmed at Chott el Djerid.

Doctor Who – Morlais Quarry

Image

It is  hard to film an episode in a town before total destruction takes place, like in the town of Pompeii. For the “Fires of Pompeii” episode of Doctor Who, the production team went to Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, where Morlais Quarry was used for the background of this historical Italian town.

Doctor Who – Ragley Hall

You don’t need to go to France to find the “Girl in the Fireplace”. Madame De Pompadour, as portrayed in “Doctor Who”, was recorded in Warwickshire at Ragley Hall.

Doctor Who – Castell Coch

Image

The same castle in Cardiff was used for at least two episodes of “Doctor Who”. The Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, first used this location in season four, “Journeys End”.
Shortly after, Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor, arrived at the same location in season 5, “The Vampires of Venice”. Still, the castle is located in Cardiff, a long way from Venice….
